What is the expiation for someone who swore by divorce, saying: "Divorce upon me that I will never go to my friend's house at all except for extreme necessity," when he did not intend divorce but rather to prevent himself from going, and now he wishes to go? And what is the expiation for breaking this oath of divorce?

Whoever suspends a divorce upon a condition, if the condition is met, the divorce occurs according to the majority of scholars, whether the husband intended the divorce or it was merely an oath. This is based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There are three matters whose seriousness is serious and whose jest is serious: marriage, divorce, and revocation [of divorce]." However, some verifying scholars, such as Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, held that the matter is tied to intention. If he intended divorce and the condition was met, it occurs; otherwise, it is an oath requiring expiation. A group of Companions, such as 'Aisha, Hafsa, Umm Salama, and Ibn Abbas, issued fatwas to this effect.
