What is the ruling on a man nursing a woman if he is compelled to do so? And are seclusion (khalwa) and intermingling (ikhtilat) in nursing considered among the forbidden means (tahrim al-wasa’il)? Nursing an unrelated man for an unrelated woman is forbidden because it involves looking and touching, unless there is a dire necessity and no woman is available to do it. In that case, it is permissible, provided it is limited to the extent of the need, without seclusion, and with the obligation to cover 'awrahs. It is permissible for necessities and needs, such as a doctor's examination for treatment, and the examination must be limited to the extent of the necessity and not exceed the area of need. Just as what the Sharia has forbidden is to block means to evil, it is permissible for a greater benefit. Security from fitnah (temptation) is a condition for permissible looking, not that forbidden looking becomes permissible under the claim of security from fitnah. The meaning of fitnah is the soul's inclination and its call to fall into intercourse and its preliminaries.
