Is a wife obligated to obey her husband if he tells her to sever ties with her family and relatives? Who bears the sin in such a case? And what is the authenticity of the story mentioned about a woman who obeyed her husband in severing ties with her family, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) endorsed her action?
Allah has made the rights of parents and relatives obligatory and has forbidden severing ties with parents, as it is an act of disobedience (ʿuqūq) and one of the greatest major sins after polytheism (shirk). Severing ties of kinship is also a major sin, as Allah the Almighty says: (Then would you, if you turned away, cause corruption in the land and sever your [ties of] kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, so He made them deaf and blinded their vision).
It is not permissible for a husband to force his wife to sever ties with her relatives without a just cause, because he would be compelling her to commit a sin. Obedience to the husband and to anyone with a right is due within what is reasonable and good (al-maʿrūf), as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Obedience is only in what is good and reasonable," and "There is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator." Rather, the husband should help his wife maintain ties with her relatives and encourage her to do so, for there is much good in it.
