Is it permissible to give zakat to a woman who sells simple goods and is not well-off, and how are the legal نصاب (minimum amount on which zakat is due) and the timing of paying zakat calculated?

It is permissible to give to a needy woman from zakat if she does not find what suffices her and those she supports, and she has no provider, even if she sells some things. The criterion is need. The zakat threshold for paper currencies is equivalent to the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. If a full year passes on it, zakat becomes obligatory at a rate of one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%). It is not permissible to delay the disbursement of zakat beyond its due time except for a legitimate excuse.
