What is the correct method for sprinkling when purifying pre-seminal fluid (madhy)?

Scholars have differed regarding the purification of madhiy (pre-seminal fluid): whether it is by nadḥ (sprinkling water without washing) or by washing. Imam Ahmad held the former view, citing the hadith of Sahl ibn Ḥunayf as evidence. However, the majority of jurists maintain that what is meant by nadḥ is washing, due to the existence of other narrations that command washing, and by analogy with other impurities. Therefore, the more cautious approach is to wash whatever part of the garment has been affected by madhiy.
