Why was the verb constructed in the passive voice in the Hadith: "and he was nourished by the unlawful"?

The aforementioned Hadith was narrated by Muslim and Al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, and it states that the man who extends his hands to the heavens, supplicating "O Lord, O Lord," while his food, drink, and nourishment come from unlawful sources, will not have his supplication answered. The expression "and he was nourished with unlawful [sustenance]" (غُذي بالحرام), in the passive voice, indicates that it makes no difference how the unlawful sustenance reached his stomach, whether he spent on himself in adulthood (his food is unlawful) or was spent on during childhood (he was nourished with unlawful sustenance).
