The majority of scholars hold that parents are not legally obligated to marry off their children, in contrast to the Hanbalis, who believe it is obligatory for the father if the child's maintenance is incumbent upon him, the child is poor, and the father has an surplus beyond his and his wife's sustenance. As for exorbitant dowries, they are not legislated; rather, what is legislated is to facilitate them, following the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "The best dowry is the easiest." The dowry of his wives, peace and blessings be upon him, was five hundred dirhams, and some scholars deemed it disliked to exceed this amount.
