Is it permissible for her to remain with her husband, who used to insult the religion, as long as he has stopped doing so, in order to avoid expected social and familial problems, especially since some of the muftis in her village have issued fatwas to her to that effect?

Cursing the religion of Islam is disbelief and apostasy. As for cursing the religion of a specific person, if the intention is to curse Islam, then it is disbelief. But if the intention is to curse the person's state or his way of practicing religion, then it is not disbelief. If the husband curses the religion itself, this is disbelief and apostasy from Islam. If this occurred before consummation, the marriage is annulled. If it occurred after consummation, the jurists differ: the Shafi'is and Hanbalis hold that if he returns to Islam before the expiry of the iddah (waiting period), his marriage remains valid, but if the iddah expires, separation occurs. As for the Hanafis and Malikis, they hold that apostasy entails immediate separation. Some scholars believe that if he repents after the iddah, he may return to his wife if she agrees.

If an apostate pronounces the two testimonies of faith (Shahadatayn), even during prayer, his Islam is judged outwardly to be valid. His repentance between him and Allah necessitates sincerity, regret, cessation of the sin, determination not to return to it, and that the repentance occurs at a time of acceptance.
