What is the ruling on a wife continuing to live with a husband who is foul-mouthed, constantly curses religion, watches forbidden movies, and insults and beats his wife, knowing that the wife detests him and they have two children? What should she do?

If the husband curses the religion, he is an apostate (kafir), and it is impermissible to remain with him. Scholars have differed regarding the separation between spouses when one of them apostatizes. Some hold that separation occurs immediately upon apostasy, while others believe it is contingent upon the expiration of the waiting period ('iddah) before repentance. If the husband repents and ceases cursing the religion before the 'iddah expires, then the marital relationship continues. As for his ill-treatment and watching forbidden things, he can be advised. If he does not desist and clear harm results, then divorce can be sought. However, if he does not repent from cursing the religion, it is impermissible to remain with him, and divorce or khul' should be sought.
