Does open commission of a minor sin, such as smoking, prevent prayers and fasting from atoning for sins?

The condemnation of publicizing sins is mentioned in the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him: "All of my Ummah are forgiven except those who publicize their sins." The meaning of "forgiven" (mu‘āfan) is either not being held accountable or being pardoned. Publicizing a sin prevents its perpetrator from receiving forgiveness for that specific sin. However, publicizing one sin does not prevent repentance from another sin, nor does it prevent the expiation of another sin by expiating acts like fasting and prayer.

Repentance from one sin is valid even while persisting in another, as long as they are not of the same type. Righteous deeds may expiate minor sins but not major sins. Scholars have differed on whether avoiding major sins is a condition for the expiation of minor sins.

Publicizing a specific sin does not prevent the expiation of other minor sins by expiating acts.
