What are the lessons learned from Verses 30-33 of Surat Sad?

Allah Almighty states that He bestowed upon His Prophet David a son, Solomon, as a prophet. Allah praised Solomon as being very obedient and devoted to worship. Solomon was presented with noble, swift horses (which stand on three legs and touch the ground with the fourth hoof). He became so engrossed in looking at them that the sun set and he missed the 'Asr prayer. He then said: "Indeed, I have loved the love of [worldly] good [horses] over the remembrance of my Lord [prayer] until it [the sun] disappeared behind the veil." So, Solomon ordered the horses to be brought back. When they were returned to him, he began "striking [their] shanks and necks," meaning he cut them, because they were the cause of him missing his prayer. Al-Shawkani explained this by saying that Solomon punished himself by destroying what distracted him from worshipping his Lord. This was permissible in their law for such a purpose, just as it is permissible in our law to destroy wealth for a valid reason.
