The answer

It is recommended to supplicate for the man's righteousness, for the hearts of people are in Allah's hands; He turns them as He wills.

If the legitimate marriage contract has been performed, then you are his wife, and it is permissible for you to speak with him. It is not permissible for him to mistreat you or to harbor ill suspicions, for Allah the Almighty says: "O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin." And his threatening divorce is poor marital conduct, for the Lord of Might says: "And live with them in kindness."

If you are merely engaged, then you are a stranger to him, and it is not permissible to speak with him except out of necessity. It seems that leniency and prolonged conversation led to the mistreatment.

If the man's situation improves and you hope for the continuation of the marriage, then accept him as a husband. Otherwise, divorce before consummation is easier, and a woman is permitted to request divorce for clear harm. Breaking off an engagement is easier than completing a marriage that might end in divorce. It is permissible to break off an engagement when there is a need, and it is disliked without a need.
