Is it permissible to give a sa' of food for Zakat al-Fitr from multiple types, such that a portion is taken from each type instead of from a single type?

Jurists differ on the ruling of giving out Zakat al-Fitr as a sa' (measure) mixed from two or more types of goods, holding two opinions: 1. The first opinion: It is not valid and does not suffice. This is the view of the Shafi'is and Ibn Hazm al-Zahiri, who base their argument on the apparent meaning of the prophetic texts that specified Zakat as a sa' from certain types of goods, and that mixing does not constitute compliance with the text. 2. The second opinion: It is valid and suffices. This is the view of the Hanafis and Hanbalis, who consider that mixing achieves the objective of Zakat in sufficing the poor.

The preferred view is that of Imam Al-Shafi'i, due to his adherence to the apparent meaning of the Prophetic Sunnah, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) enjoined Zakat al-Fitr as a sa' from a single type of good.
