The answer

Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory as a sa' of food. It is permissible to give it as rice, lentils, chickpeas, and similar staples that people consume. As for giving it as chicken meat, it is not permissible in our lands, because the predominant staple food here is wheat and rice. There is no harm if each family member gives a different sa' of food, and it is permissible to give these asa' to one needy person or to a group. The best approach in this regard is what is most beneficial to the poor.
