Is it permissible to give out vegetables for Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr must be paid in food from the staple diet of the people, such as rice, lentils, and dates. "Staple diet" refers to what the majority of people rely on for their food and store, and it includes grains, dried fruits, bread (and its meat and flour), dried fruit, meat, and milk. Vegetables, however, are not sufficient because they are not considered a staple food. The basis for this is the hadith narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): "During the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, we used to give out on the day of Eid al-Fitr one sa' of food, and our food was barley, raisins, dried yogurt, and dates." One sa' of the staple food of the people of the land must be given, even if it is meat or milk, if that is their staple food. The purpose is to meet the needs of the poor on the day of Eid.
