What is the ruling on one who listens to music alone and does not attend public musical concerts? Is this considered hypocrisy or a whisper from Satan?
Committing sins incurs Allah's wrath and punishment, and openly proclaiming them is an even greater sin, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "All of my Ummah are pardoned except for the Mujahireen (those who openly declare their sins)." If a person refrains from openly declaring their sins out of shyness before Allah, then they only bear the sin of the transgression. However, if it is done with the intention of showing off (riyaa'), then they bear the sin of the transgression and the sin of showing off, for Allah Almighty says: "They conceal themselves from men, but they cannot conceal themselves from Allah." Abandoning an action for the sake of people is showing off, and performing an action for their sake is polytheism (shirk).
