Is it permissible to exaggerate in complimenting and praising one's mother with words that make her happy, even though the son knows that these words are not مطابق للواقع (in accordance with reality)?

It is preferable to use veiled compliments (ta'reeḍ); otherwise, it is permissible to lie with the intention of pleasing a woman, especially if it does not result in harm to anyone.

Ibn Uyaynah was of the opinion that lying is permissible in matters that do not cause harm to anyone if good is intended by it. He based his argument on the actions of Prophets Ibrahim and Yusuf (peace be upon them).

Ibn Abd al-Barr, in "Al-Tamheed," reported Sufyan ibn Uyaynah as saying: "He who says something good, or reconciles between people, is not a liar." This view was also favored by Ibn al-Jawzi and Ibn al-Qayyim.
