What is the ruling on praying Dhuhr instead of Jumu'ah in Canada for someone who is unable to attend Jumu'ah prayer due to studies, and does this ruling apply to a resident for ten months?
Friday prayer is obligatory for men who are able to attend it, and abstaining from it without a legitimate excuse is considered a major sin. Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumuʿah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade." The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against abandoning Jumu'ah prayer, saying: "People should stop neglecting the Friday prayers, or Allah will seal their hearts and they will be among the heedless," and "Whoever abandons three Jumu'ahs out of negligence, Allah will seal his heart." Legitimate excuses for missing Jumu'ah prayer are: fear for oneself, family, or property, illness, nursing, severe mud, or rain. Studying and seeking knowledge are not among the permissible excuses for abandoning Jumu'ah prayer.
