What should a person do who suffers from intermittent flatulence, which causes him hardship in performing ablution and Friday prayer, and he is unsure whether what is emitted is gas or if he has held it in, despite his attempts at treatment proving fruitless?

If a man is afflicted with waswasa (obsessive whispering), he must disregard it and pay no attention to it. He should not rule that his ablution (wudu) is nullified unless he has absolute certainty, because purity is a certainty that is not removed by doubt. If he becomes certain that his purity has been nullified, then he must perform ablution. It does not harm him if he misses the takbirat al-ihram (opening takbir) or the first rak'ah (unit of prayer) of Jumu'ah (Friday prayer), for Jumu'ah is attained by catching one rak'ah of it, and the reward for his early arrival will not be lost.
