How can animation be permissible to make and watch, despite the prohibition of drawing animate beings, and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying that angels do not enter a house in which there is a picture?

The basic rule regarding drawing animate beings is prohibition. However, it has been permitted for the purpose of educating children, by analogy with the permissible images of dolls. Some scholars have allowed electronic drawings that are free from anything that violates creed and morals. We issue a fatwa permitting the production of purposeful cartoon films, provided they are free from prohibitions and adhere to Islamic guidelines. Similarly, watching animated cartoons is permissible if they are free from Islamic prohibitions.
