Is it permissible for my Muslim wife to inherit from her Christian parents or relatives, and will her daughter inherit from her? What is the ruling on writing a will for her or giving her something during her lifetime?

The majority of scholars hold that there is no inheritance between a Muslim and a disbeliever. Another group of scholars, however, maintains that a Muslim inherits from his disbelieving non-belligerent relative. This is the chosen view of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim. If a Muslim inherits from his disbelieving relative, his inheritance is according to Islamic Sharia, and her Muslim relatives inherit from her, not the disbelievers. As for a bequest to or from them, it is permissible by Sharia.

We point out that the phrase "a Christian woman" is not appropriate; the correct phrasing is "she was Christian."
