What should someone do whose sins have multiplied in solitude until they have reached the clouds, and he has begun to feel that he is enslaved by them and a hypocrite, even though he prays Fajr in congregation, communes with Allah and supplicates Him, loves Allah and His Messenger, and helps people, yet his affairs are difficult and he feels distressed?

Loving Allah and His Messenger is an obligation and a reason for the heart's vitality and the soul's tranquility. Sins committed in private are dangerous and necessitate self-reflection and sincerity in good deeds. Sincere repentance is one of the greatest means of purifying the soul; it keeps the heart alive with the fear and mindfulness of Allah, and it leads to the angels supplicating for those who repent. One must avoid the causes of sin, such as bad company. Sins and acts of disobedience can cause distress and anguish, and this distress might be a trial that requires patience to expiate misdeeds and elevate ranks.
