The answer

There are two types of dolls that children play with: The first type is that which is made from fiber and cloth. There is no harm in making it, playing with it, or keeping it, according to the majority of scholars. The proof for this is the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not object to her playing with dolls. The second type is that which is made from plastic or similar materials, perfectly resembling the human body. Contemporary scholars have differed on this type, holding two opinions: The first is prohibition, as it falls under the general proofs that indicate the prohibition of making statues. The second opinion is permissibility, based on the concession established in the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). However, it is more cautious to avoid these dolls and to suffice with other toys that do not resemble animate beings.
