What is the ruling on changing one's status on social media sites like Facebook to "busy," "at work," or "going to school"?
A Muslim must be truthful in all their communications, whether about themselves or others, verbally or in writing, as Allah Almighty says: (O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with the truthful) [Surat At-Tawbah 9:119]. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged truthfulness and warned against lying, for "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise," and "Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire." Therefore, it is necessary to be truthful in what a person writes about themselves and their status on social media. It is not permissible to lie, such as writing that one is in a certain place when they are in another. If one forgets to change their status, they should change it when it becomes possible for them to do so.
