Is prolonged staying up late to memorize the Holy Quran and ponder its meanings, with little realization of it, better than observing the night vigil with prayer and Quranic recitation?

Seeking Islamic knowledge, memorizing the Quran, reflecting upon it, and studying it are all acts of night vigil (Qiyam al-Layl). It is best to combine night vigil with seeking knowledge, as it helps solidify that knowledge. Memorizing the Quran is a great deed, and the status of its memorizer is almost unparalleled. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it." A Muslim should balance good deeds. Imam Al-Shafi'i said: "Whoever memorizes the Quran, his value becomes great. Whoever seeks fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), his status becomes noble. Whoever writes hadith, his arguments become strong. Whoever studies Arabic grammar, his nature becomes refined. And whoever does not protect himself, knowledge will not protect him."
