Is the "miserable life" mentioned in the Noble Verse: (But whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a miserable life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind) in this world, or in Barzakh, or in both, and have some scholars and exegetes stated this?

The straitened life (al-ma'ishah ad-ḍank) in the Holy Quran (Taha/124) means hardship, severity, and misery. The exegetes have differed on determining its timing, offering several opinions:

1. Grave torment: Based on narrations from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Companions, despite a difference in whether some of these hadiths are marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) or mawquf (attributed to a Companion). 2. Hellfire torment: Because the life of the Hereafter is the true life, and the disbeliever in Hell lives a straitened life in a confined place, and his food is torment. 3. Worldly life: By having his sustenance from unlawful sources, or by having contentment removed from his heart, or by being in anxiety, confusion, and internal misery, even if he possesses the world.

The most probable view is that these interpretations do not contradict each other; rather, they represent a diversity of understanding. Indeed, whoever turns away from the remembrance of Allah lives a straitened life in this world, in the Barzakh (interim period), and on the Day of Judgment, due to the generality of the verse and its not being restricted to a specific time.
