The answer

The relationship between parents and child is one of love and care from birth until maturity. The mother carries and nourishes, while the father works and protects. Parental care continues until the male reaches puberty and the female marries; then, the children's role in returning the favor begins. The Sharia has urged this. Regarding the father's right over the parents: ("Mothers shall breastfeed their children for two whole years...") [Al-Baqarah:233], and ("And upon the father is their provision and their clothing according to what is reasonable") [Al-Baqarah:233]. Regarding the parents' right over the children: ("And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And to parents, show good treatment.") [Al-Isra:23], and ("And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship...") [Al-Ahqaf:15]. This outcome can only be achieved when both parties are aware of their duties.
