Is it permissible to use socks made of 70% dog hair, whether the hair is from tanned hide or from a living dog, and is it permissible to pray in them and wipe over them for ablution, or is it only permissible for those suffering from health problems?

Scholars differed regarding the purity of dog hair. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis held that it is impure, while the Hanafis and Malikis (which was also the choice of Ibn Taymiyyah) held that it is pure.

To avoid controversy, it is advisable not to pray while wearing or to wipe over socks that have been touched by dog hair, as there is sufficient alternative in what is pure. However, whoever wishes to emulate those who deem it pure may do so.

There is no difference in the ruling between the hair of a living dog or a dead one. For if hair is pure in life, it does not become impure by death.
