What is the meaning of "his soul became insignificant to him for the sake of Allah, and he became insignificant to his people," as stated in the Hadith of Bilal?

Ibn Mas'ud mentioned that the first to openly declare their Islam were seven individuals, among them Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), who was subjected to severe torture by the polytheists. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) kept repeating "Ahadun Ahad" (One, One) during his torment, which only intensified their rage. The meaning of "his soul became insignificant to him" is that his self became small in his own eyes for the sake of Allah, so he did not care about the harm that befell him. The meaning of "he was insignificant to his people" is that he held no value among them as a black slave who had no protection. Allah rescued him at the hands of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), who bought and freed him.
