Is it permissible for a woman to secretly take money from her husband if he is remiss in providing for her and her basic needs, despite his financial ability, and does any sin result from her keeping the money or from having to pay zakat on it?

The husband is obligated to provide for his wives, and fathers are obligated to provide for their children. If the husband does not give his wife what is sufficient for her and her children according to what is customary, then she has the right to take what is sufficient for her without his knowledge, based on the hadith: "Take what is sufficient for you and your child according to what is customary." As for his giving to his mother and siblings, it is a praiseworthy act of righteousness and maintaining kinship ties. The wife saving her husband's money without his knowledge, and then giving it to him as if it were the price of a piece of her own gold, involves two prohibitions: unlawfully saving his money and lying. Therefore, the money must be returned to him. It is permissible to spend it on essential household expenses, but it is not permissible to pay the Zakat of gold from it. Gold customarily used for adornment does not have Zakat on it according to the more preponderant opinion, whereas gold intended for saving or trade is subject to Zakat.
