How can one deal with a mother who mistreats her husband, who is suffering from cancer and heart disease, taking advantage of his illness, and what is the way to change her behavior through the Quran and fatwas?
Marital life is a field for gaining Allah's pleasure through good companionship, and the wife has a significant share in this.
Ahmad narrated from Al-Husayn ibn Mihsan that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his aunt, "Look to where you stand with him, for he is your Paradise or your Hellfire." Al-Nasa'i narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Shall I not inform you about your women from among the people of Paradise? The loving, the fertile, the one who returns to her husband, who, if she offends or is offended, comes until she takes her husband's hand, then says: 'By Allah, I shall not taste sleep until you are pleased.'"
Conversely, there are texts that warn against a wife's mistreatment of her husband and her rebellion (nushuz), and Islamic law has granted the husband the right to discipline her for nushuz. Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Umar ibn Al-Harith ibn Al-Mutalliq: "It used to be said: 'The two people most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection are: a woman who disobeys her husband, and a leader of people whom they dislike.'" Scholars have mentioned that the husband's displeasure causes the Lord's displeasure, citing the agreed-upon hadith from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "If a woman spends the night abandoning her husband's bed, the angels curse her until morning." Al-Munawi said: "This indicates that the husband's displeasure necessitates the Lord's displeasure."
We recommend being gentle with the mother and advising her kindly, reminding her of the virtue of loyalty to her husband, in accordance with Allah's saying: "And do not forget graciousness among yourselves. Indeed, Allah is Seeing of what you do" (Al-Baqarah: 237).
