Is the missed prayer to be performed after more than one day as an obligatory prayer or as a supererogatory prayer?

If a Muslim misses a fard (obligatory) prayer, he must make it up with the intention of it being an obligatory prayer, according to the majority of scholars. His responsibility is not discharged except by doing so, even if a long time has passed. As for sunnah (recommended) prayers, it is recommended to make them up, but not obligatory. Some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah, held the view that a prayer missed without a valid excuse should not be made up; rather, one must repent and perform many supererogatory prayers. The scholars who affirmed the obligation of making up missed prayers agreed on the necessity of promptly making up the obligatory prayer that was left without an excuse. As for a prayer missed due to a valid excuse, the majority opinion is that it should be made up immediately, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it, for there is no expiation for it except that," and his saying: "Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it whenever he remembers it."
