Is the repentance of a person who was steadfast in his prayers and committed to abandoning sins then returned to drinking alcohol and abandoning prayer accepted, and must he make up the missed prayers, and what should he do?

The questioner must repent to Allah and remain steadfast in it, for he has committed grave matters by returning to drinking alcohol after repenting, breaking his covenant with Allah, and abandoning prayer. Allah Almighty says: (O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause animosity and hatred between you through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?) And one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. The majority of scholars hold that his failure to fulfill his covenant only necessitates repentance. However, according to Sheikh Al-Islam, it requires an expiation for breaking an oath along with repentance. And the missed prayers must be made up along with repentance.
