Consuming alcohol is a major sin, and curses have been reported against its drinker and those who cooperate with him. However, the door to repentance is open. Some hadiths indicate that the prayer of an alcohol consumer is not accepted for forty days, but he is still obligated to perform it. He is also permitted to touch the Mus'haf and recite the Qur'an if he is ritually pure. The meaning of "non-acceptance" of prayer is that no reward is accrued, although the prayer itself is valid. The hadith that mentions Allah not accepting the repentance of an alcohol consumer the fourth time carries the meaning of hyperbole in warning, because sincere repentance is always accepted. Achieving repentance involves regret, abstaining from the sin, and resolving never to return to it. Allah accepts repentance from His servants and pardons evil deeds.
