Why was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) buried in Medina and not in Mecca?

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was buried in Medina because he died there. It is a unique characteristic of prophets that they are buried where they die, based on the Prophet’s statement, "Indeed, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is not moved from his place; he is buried from where he dies," and his statement, "Allah never takes a prophet’s soul except in the place where He loves for him to be buried."
