What is Du'a al-Qunut, and is it obligatory in the Fajr prayer, and what is the ruling on omitting it?

Qunut is supplication, obedience, and prolonged standing in prayer. The best supplication is that narrated by Al-Hasan ibn Ali: "O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided..." It is a Sunnah in the Witr prayer after bowing (rukūʿ), and it is permissible before it. The imams differed regarding its legitimacy in the Fajr prayer: Ahmad and Abu Hanifah hold that it is not a Sunnah, while Malik and Al-Shafi'i hold that it is a Sunnah. This difference of opinion is valid, and no one should be criticized for holding a different view.
