How can one reconcile the existence of torment and accountability in the grave with the statement of the disbelievers when they are resurrected on the Day of Judgment: "Woe to us! Who has raised us from our sleeping place?"

Ibn Kathir said regarding the verse: "They will say, 'Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?'" that they meant their graves, from which they believed they would not be resurrected. This does not contradict the torment of the grave, because compared to what comes after it, it is like a slumber. Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Mujahid, Al-Hasan, and Qatadah held the view that they will sleep a slumber before the resurrection, and that this will be between the two blasts of the trumpet. When they say, "Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?" the believers or the angels will answer them with the words of Allah Almighty: "This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth." Thus, there is no contradiction between the verse and the texts regarding the torment of the grave.
