What is the ruling on continuing to take sedatives for more than eight years, while fulfilling religious, familial, professional, and social obligations, and unsuccessfully attempting to stop them?

It is permissible to use tranquilizer pills for medication and treatment. The presence of a narcotic in them does not necessitate their prohibition, because the default ruling is permissibility unless there is a text indicating prohibition, and due to the need for their use. As for narcotic pills such as opium and the like, their use is not permissible because they are intoxicants, and every intoxicant is Khamr (wine/alcohol), and every Khamr is forbidden.
