What is the ruling on wearing what is called a "bishah" that covers the eyes, and is the wearer rewarded for it? What is the ruling on a husband who forces his wife to wear it? And why do women not emulate the Mothers of the Believers and the female Companions who did not wear it?

A woman is commanded to cover her face from non-mahram men, based on the Almighty’s saying: (they should draw over themselves from their outer garments). Imam Al-Tabari interpreted drawing the jilbab as covering the face and head, so that nothing but one eye is visible, citing the statements of Ibn Abbas, Ubaidah, and others.

As for the niqab, it was known in the early days and revealed both eyes. The permissibility of showing the eyes is indicated by the hadith in Al-Bukhari: (And the woman in ihram should not wear a niqab).

It is permissible for a woman to show her eyes or one eye in the niqab, but this should not be done in an expansive manner that leads to ostentation.

Sheikh Ibn Baz issued a fatwa that there is no harm in a niqab that shows only the amount of one eye or both eyes, but it is forbidden if it is too wide.

If the husband sees fit to forbid the niqab, or feels jealous about his wife showing her eyes, or sees that she does not wear it correctly, and orders her to wear a ghashwa (face covering), then she must obey him, as long as wearing it does not cause harm.
