Sixty poor people must be fed as expiation for ẓihār (a pre-Islamic form of divorce by injurious utterance) and for sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan, after being unable to fast for two consecutive months. The feeding can take place wherever poor people are found, by finding families whose total members amount to sixty people and giving them what is due to them. Scholars have differed on the exact amount required: the Shafi'is and Malikis stated it is one mudd of food (approximately 750 grams) for each poor person, while the Hanbalis stated it is one mudd of wheat or half a ṣāʿ of other types of food (approximately 1.5 kilograms), which is the more cautious approach. It is permissible to gather the sixty poor people and provide them with lunch or dinner. However, the majority of scholars do not consider monetary value acceptable as a substitute for food. A child in the family is counted among the poor, and their guardian receives the food on their behalf.
