Is masturbation one of the major sins for which there is no expiation except through repentance, or is it expiated by prayer to prayer or Friday to Friday?

Masturbation is prohibited by the majority of scholars, though some have permitted it out of necessity, such as for one who fears falling into zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) or illness. Despite its prohibition, it is not considered a major sin (kabirah); however, persistent engagement in it places it in the category of a major sin, and the accumulation of minor sins can lead to one's destruction. The five daily prayers atone for the sins committed between them, provided that major sins are avoided.
