What is the Shar'i ruling on a Muslim worker remaining in his job despite his inability and the employer's inability to find work for him? Is he obligated to resign, and what is the ruling on the money earned from his salary if he spends his time on personal matters? What is your advice to the Muslim worker, the employer, and the quarreling colleagues?

An employee is considered a private hireling (ajeer khass) who deserves full wages as long as they have submitted themselves to the employer and have not refused to work, whether work is available or not. They must adhere to the specified working hours and perform the tasks assigned to them with honesty and excellence. If they do so, there is no blame upon them for utilizing free time for personal benefit, provided that this does not conflict with their work.

As for advising those who dispute at work, let them remember the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech. Do not spy, do not eavesdrop, do not envy one another, do not turn away from one another, and do not hate one another; rather, be servants of Allah as brothers." Let them know that this world is a temporary abode of trials, not of permanence, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the world is sweet and green, and Allah has made you its vicegerents to see how you will act."

It is incumbent upon the wise person that their ambition be directed towards their afterlife, for whoever does so will attain the good of both this world and the Hereafter. Competing for this world is a cause of ruin, and asceticism regarding it is a cause of salvation, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that the world will be expanded for you as it was expanded for those before you, and you will compete for it as they competed, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them."
