Must Zakat al-Fitr be made up if it was paid in cash due to ignorance of the ruling?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The madhhab of the three Imams (Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and Ahmad) is that Zakat al-Fitr is to be given from the staple food, one saa' for every free Muslim and for those whose maintenance is obligatory upon him. Abu Hanifa holds the view that it is permissible to give its monetary value out of necessity, and this is the chosen opinion here. Therefore, there is no need to make up for what has passed, and in the future, it should be given in the form of food unless there is a necessity to give its monetary value.
