Is there any mention of bats in Islam, and are they impure?

Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on eating bats (al-waṭwāṭ). The Hanbalis and Shafi’is held that it is forbidden because it is considered among the detestable things that Arabs do not find palatable. A difference of opinion within the Shafi’i school has been narrated regarding it. As for the Hanafis, they differed concerning it. The Malikis considered it disliked (makruh) but not forbidden.
