What is the ruling on studying at a university and obtaining an academic degree from a university named after a specific religion (such as: the German Catholic University or the French Jewish University), knowing that the study does not include religious subjects and aims only to obtain a degree in non-religious specializations like administration or engineering?

Universities that offer purely secular sciences in disbelieving countries are similar to other universities in disbelieving countries; they are environments prone to doubts and temptations. Scholars permit studying in them under conditions, including: the necessity for it, and safety from temptation, meaning the student must be highly confident that he is capable of repelling doubts and temptations.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen mentioned that traveling to disbelieving countries involves a risk to one's religion, as a believer is affected by the environment in which he lives, except for those whom Allah protects. A believer should avoid disbelieving countries as much as possible. However, if there is a necessity, and the person has knowledge to repel doubts, and worship that prevents deviation, then travel is permissible according to these three conditions: necessity, the existence of knowledge to repel doubts, and the existence of strong worship to prevent deviation. If one of these conditions is not met, then travel is not permissible, especially for young people, as most of those who travel to disbelieving countries return with a different religion and character than what they left with.
