Is it permissible for the husband to leave the house after a verbal dispute with his wife to calm down, then return?

There is no blame on the husband if he fears that anger and impulsiveness will overwhelm him, for him to leave the house until he calms down, and then return to appease his wife or for her to appease him. This is indicated by what Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, did when he was angry with Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, and left the house. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then found him sleeping in the mosque. Ibn Battal stated that this indicates that people of virtue may become angry and may leave the house due to anger, and they are not to be blamed for that. It is probable that the reason Ali left was his fear that he might say something inappropriate in Fatimah's presence while angry.
