Is one who participates with his family in a communal reading of the Qur’an, believing it to be an innovation, in order to please them, sinful, or must he openly denounce that and disobey his parents in this matter?

We advise the questioner to continue guiding his family, admonishing them, and clarifying the truth to them with wisdom, good counsel, gentleness, and kindness. If they are guided, then praise be to Allah. But if they persist in their innovation, then he must distance himself from them in that matter, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "Obedience is only in what is right," and "There is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator." He should continue to advise them and clarify that drawing near to Allah can only be through what He has legislated in His Book or the Sunnah of His Messenger, in accordance with His (the Almighty) saying: (He Who created death and life to test you—which of you is best in deed—and He is the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving). And Fudayl ibn Iyad, in interpreting "best in deed," said: "the most sincere and the most correct." For a deed is not accepted until it is sincere for Allah and correct according to the Sunnah.
