Is a person who volunteers for jihad in the way of Allah given a share of zakat?

The recipients of Zakat are clarified by Allah in His statement: (As-Sadaqaat (Zakat) are only for the Fuqaraa’ (the poor), and Al-Masaakeen (the needy) and those employed to collect (the funds); and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah’s Cause (i.e. those fighting in the holy battles), and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise) [At-Tawbah/60]. The category "for Allah’s Cause" refers to Jihad (struggle) in the way of Allah, and some scholars also include Hajj (pilgrimage) under this category.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy on him, stated that specifying "for Allah’s Cause" to Jihad is beyond doubt. He held that this category includes those who fight (ghuzaat), their weapons, and everything that aids Jihad, even guides, due to the generality of the verse: (and for Allah’s Cause) and not "for the Mujahideen." He further opined that it is permissible to purchase weapons from Zakat funds for fighting in the way of Allah.
