What is the meaning of the Qunut supplication in the Fajr prayer: "O Allah, guide us among those You have guided, and grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, and bless us in what You have given us, and befriend us among those You have befriended, and protect us from the evil of what You have decreed, for You decree and none can decree against You. And indeed, none whom You have befriended shall be humiliated, and none whom You have antagonized shall be honored. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted. And to You be praise for what You have decreed. We seek Your forgiveness, O Allah, and repent to You. And may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Master Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and upon his family and companions"?

The aforementioned Hadith is authentically reported in the Sunan, and its explanation is as follows:

"اللهم اهدني" (O Allah, guide me): Make me firm in guidance or increase its means for me. "فيمن هديت" (among those whom You have guided): Among the group of prophets and saints whom You have guided. "وعافني فيمن عافيت" (and grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being): From the worst ailments, morals, and whims. "وتولني فيمن توليت" (and take me under Your care among those whom You have taken under Your care): Take charge of my affairs and do not leave me to myself. "وبارك لي فيما أعطيت" (and bless for me what You have given me): Increase the good for me in what You have given me. "وقني شر ما قضيت" (and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed): Safeguard me from what You have decreed for me. "فإنك تقضي ولا يقضى عليك" (for verily You decree and none can decree over You): You decree and judge, and no one can comment on Your judgment. "إنه لا يذل من واليت" (Indeed, he whom You protect shall not be humbled): He whom You help will not become humiliated. "ولا يعز من عاديت" (and he whom You take as an enemy shall not be honored): He whom You take as an enemy will not be honored, even if he is given the delights of this world. "تباركت ربنا وتعاليت" (Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted are You): Your goodness has multiplied, and Your greatness has risen.

The authentic narration concludes here and does not include "ولك الحمد على ما قضيت" (and to You is all praise for what You have decreed) nor "نستغفرك اللهم ونتوب إليك" (we seek Your forgiveness, O Allah, and we repent to You). The meaning of "لك الحمد على ما قضيت" is that You are to be praised for every decree, and the meaning of "نستغفرك اللهم ونتوب إليك" is to seek forgiveness and repentance. The prayer upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, is a request for more mercy and safety for him, and his family are the believers from Banu Hashim, and his companions are everyone who met him as a believer and died upon that.
