How can one reconcile verse 38 of Surat Maryam (38. How clearly they will hear and how clearly they will see on the Day they come to Us! But today the wrongdoers are in manifest error) with verse 97 of Surat Al-Isra (97. And We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection, fallen on their faces, blind, mute, and deaf)?

There is no contradiction in the texts of revelation regarding the states of disbelievers in the afterlife. Scholars offer two main answers concerning this:

1. Disbelievers will be blind, mute, and deaf in certain stages of the afterlife (such as at the time of gathering), and in other stages, they will see, speak, and hear. This is the stronger and more apparent view. 2. The negation of these faculties from them is specific to what brings them no benefit, while their affirmation applies to what does not please them or does not provide them with an argument. Thus, they do not see or hear what pleases them, nor do they utter any valid argument.

Therefore, each situation in the afterlife has a state that is appropriate for it.
